Overview:
The Mahishamardini Rock Cut Mandapa is a Hindu shrine located in Mamallapuram, a small town located in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the many ancient structures and monuments that have been declared as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1984. The sacred shrine is home to goddess Durga, also known as Mahishamardini, who is popularly known for slaying the demon Mahishasura. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Mahishamardini Rock Cut Mandapa is a cave-like structure carved into a single rock which is believed to date back to the 7th century. Inside the shrine, there is a 6-faced idol of Mahishamardini on the central wall, accompanied with other deities such as Brahma, Vishnu, and Arjuna. The mandapa (cave) also features impressive carvings and sculptures of animals, birds and divine creatures. You must visit one of these historical places in India on your India tour
