The Kailasanatha Temple is known for its impressive structure and exquisite ornamentation. The main temple gopuram is a three tier structure with four cardinal directions in each tier. The entire temple is supported by 64 pillars, each of which is adorned with intricate carvings of elegant figures, scenes from mythology and geometric patterns. Kailasanatha Temple, Salabogam was built by King Vijayala, of the Chola dynasty in the 8th century CE. The temple was later renovated by the Hoysala Dynasty between the 12th and 13th centuries. The temple is associated with various legends, including the story of a devotee of Lord Shiva named Salukkangai Kondar, who bore the mental anguish of his daughter not being able to get married and prayed to Lord Shiva for his daughter's marriage. The Lord granted his wish and the temple was built in honour of the Lord.
