Overview:
sanatha Temple , Salabogam is a Hindu temple located in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. Constructed approximately in the 8th century, the temple is an example of ancient Dravidian architecture and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is constructed in such a manner that the shadow of the dome of the main temple never touches the ground. The temple is also known as Salabhanjikeshwara Temple and Rishabeshwara Temple. The temple is believed to have been built by the Cholas and later renovated by the Hoysala Dynasty. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Kailasanatha Temple is known for its impressive structure and exquisite ornamentation. The main temple gopuram is a three tier structure with four cardinal directions in each tier. The temple also features several sculptures of Hindu gods and a grand Nandhi mandapam . The most striking feature of this temple complex is the impressive Gopurams, which look down from their great heights. The entire temple is supported by 64 pillars, each of which is adorned with intricate carvings of elegant figures, scenes from mythology and geometric patterns. Kailasanatha Temple, Salabogam was built by King Vijayala, of the Chola dynasty in the 8th century CE. The temple was later renovated by the Hoysala Dynasty between the 12th and 13th centuries. The temple is associated with various legends, including the story of a devotee of Lord Shiva named Salukkangai Kondar, who bore the mental anguish of his daughter not being able to get married and prayed to Lord Shiva for his daughter's marriage. The Lord granted his wish and the temple was built in honour of the Lord.
