Overview:
Gond Fort is a citadel situated in the Gond tribal kingdom of Gondwana, located in the Satpura Ranges near Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh, India. It was constructed by the Gond Kings during the 12th century and is considered to be one of the oldest fortresses in India. It has been of strategic importance and has been occupied by various rulers in its history. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The fort has massive walls, watchtowers and ponds with chhatris. Inside the walls, there is a religious temple of Lord Shiva and fortifications made of stone. The Gond tribal kingdom of Gondwana was established by Raja Durjan Sal in the 12th century. He also built the Gond Fort to serve his kingdom. The fort has since then been used to protect the region and has seen several battles. It was also occupied by Delhi Sultanate forces and later by the Mughals during their rule in the 15th and 16th century.
