Bada Madarsa Overview Bada Madarsa, also known as Bada Madrasa, is an Islamic educational institute which was established in the 19th century by the Mughal dynasty. It is located in Old Delhi, India and houses several Islamic manuscripts, artifacts and documents. Prominent Features • Bada Madarsa building was constructed in 1821 in the Mughal architectural style • It has magnificent red stone walls, four onion shaped domes, balcony and a large gate. • Inside the building, there are four large courtyards, four minarets and a few small edifices. • The main building and the surrounding structures of Bada Madarsa were impacted by the British East India Company during the Sepoy Rebellion in 1857. Bada Madarsa History • Bada Madarsa was established by the Mughal Emperor ShahJahan in the mid 19th century. • The school was initially constructed to be a training center for Urdu and Farsi languages. • Bada Madarsa has a glorious past and was the center for Islamic scriptures for many years. • In 1857, the British East India Company damaged parts of the building and the surrounding structures due to the Sepoy Rebellion. • In 1917, the Bada Madarsa building was damaged again, this time due to an earthquake. • Over the years, several renovation works were done and new structures were added to the existing building. • In 2010, the Bada Madarsa was declared as a heritage site by the Indian Government. Bada Madarsa Interesting Facts • The building was constructed by an Indian Mughal artisan. • The four onion shaped domes are the most distinctive features of the building. • Bada Madarsa was also used as a palace by the Mughal rulers during its early years of existence. • The building has large doors facing to the east, which were designed by the Mughal architects. • The Bada Madarsa has a large library which houses several Islamic manuscripts and documents.
