Vreed-en-Hoop Presbyterian Church is a historic Presbyterian church located in the Vreed-en-Hoop suburb of Guyana. It was established by the London Missionary Society in 1837. The church is named after a nearby estate which was used by Reverend John Smith to produce sugar during the colonial period. The Vreed-en-Hoop Presbyterian Church is one of the oldest churches in Guyana. Its original wooden structure was replaced in the late 19th century with a brick building. The Church has seen many architectural changes, including the addition of a central turret in 1932. The Vreed-en-Hoop Presbyterian Church is an important part of the local community, providing spiritual guidance and fellowship. It serves a congregation of around 300 members, and its services are open to the public. The church provides services in English, as well as in the local Amerindian languages. It also runs Sunday schools, youth programs, and women’s and men’s associations. It has actively participated in civic activities and national events. The Vreed-en-Hoop Presbyterian Church is the headquarters for the Presbytery of Demerara, which oversees the Presbyterian Church in Guyana. It is an active member church of the World Communion of Reformed Churches.
