Mission Chapel Congregational Church, New Amsterdam is a historic African American church in the city of New Amsterdam, Dutch Guiana (now Suriname). Founded in 1777, the church is the oldest African American church in South America. Since the early 19th century, the congregation has been mainly composed of indigenous and African Surinamese people and many of its members were formerly enslaved. Mission Chapel was founded in response to the slave culture that existed in the colony and for many of the church members, it was the place where they could find a spiritual home and renewal. Today, the church stands as a symbol of hope for the African Diaspora.
