The worship of Mother Goddess Durga at the Durga Mandir in Canal Number Two Polder, West Bank Demerara, Guyana usually begins with the morning ‘Arati’ where oil wicks are lit and waved before an image of the Goddess. This is followed by offering of fruits, flowers and incense. Then, the priest recites hymns from the Hindu scriptures, and devotees chant in unison. Prasad, or blessed offerings of food, are then distributed to the worshippers. The day-long Puja (worship) of Mother Goddess Durga is celebrated with much enthusiasm and joy. It usually consists of various activities such as Shodashopachara (a sixteen-fold form of worship), chanting of mantras, offering of ‘Gandh’ (incense), japa of mantras (chanting of mantras 108 times) and performing the traditional rituals to please the Goddess. The devotees also observe the “Nava Gourava” ritual by pouring out nine pots of water filled with different holy offerings and blessings. At the end of the special Puja ceremony, devotees take a final blessing from the Goddess and then proceed to the aarati (worship of the image of the Goddess with light and incense) and prasad (blessed offerings).
