History:

The Ulm City Hall is one of the best known and most recognizable structures in the German city of Ulm. It is located on the city’s main square (Marktplatz) and is the traditional meeting place for the authorities and citizens of the city. The building was originally built in the early 1660s as the Schultheißenhaus, or Magistrate’s House. It served as the seat of the mayor and other magistrates and was the place where local laws were passed and enforced. Over the years the building was extensively remodeled and expanded. In 1788, a great fire destroyed most of the city center, including the City Hall, and it was rebuilt as a neo-Gothic structure by local architect Kerem Dreyer. The facade of the building is decorated with sculptures, including two figures (representing Justice and Prudence) that stand guard outside the building’s entrance. During World War II, the City Hall was damaged by bombing, but it was restored to its original condition in 1952. Today, the building serves as the seat of the local government, and the mayor’s office, as well as the workplace of the civil servants, can be found here. Every year on April 1st, the city’s mayors traditionally present the annual budget in the grand council chamber of the City Hall.
