The Church of St. James was built in 1633 and was dedicated to St. James, the patron saint of pilgrims. It replaced a much smaller building that had been in use by local people since the 12th century. Victorian alterations, including the building of a new tower, altered the appearance of the church in 1874. In 1944, the church was hit by a V-1 bomb in the Second World War and, though undamaged, never fully recovered from the damage caused by the raid.
