History:

Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich is the world’s first and oldest scientifically planned zoo. It was established in 1911 by King Ludwig III of Bavaria as part of the city of Munich’s zoological gardens. The zoo is situated on the Isar River along with a park named Tierpark Hellabrunn. Upon opening, it created a new standard for the design of animal enclosures that mimicked the animals' natural habitat and also provided better access for zoo visitors. The zoo was originally overseen by the city of Munich, but in 1918, it was transferred to the Bavarian government in order to protect the endangered species in Bavaria. During World War II, the zoo was badly damaged, but a renovation and rebuilding effort began in 1945 and the zoo reopened in May 1950. The Royal Bavarian Society for the Care of Animals, which had been begun in 1909, provided financial support until the zoo became a public body in 1977.
