History:

The Weimar City Castle (Weimarer Schloss) is located in the city of Weimar in Germany. It was originally a fortified city wall and was first mentioned in 1233. It was originally built to protect the castle inhabitants from outside attack as well as used by the counts and dukes of Saxony-Weimar. During the Renaissance period (1500s to 1600s), the castle was enlarged and modernized to accommodate the new ruling family. In 1683, the castle was destroyed in a fire that had been set by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War and was subsequently rebuilt in the baroque style. The castle was then used as the residence of the ruling dukes and duchesses until the early 1800s. In 1809, the castle was again damaged during the Napoleonic Wars and was restored and modernized after the wars. In 1853, the castle was renovated under the direction of architect Friedrich Wilhelm von Gärtner in the neo-classical style during the period of Grand Duke Carl August. In 1919, the Weimar republic was founded, and the castle served as the meeting place for government meetings. During World War II, the castle was severely damaged in 1945 by the retreating German army and lay in ruins for many years afterwards. In the postwar period, the castle was restored and opened to the public in 1980. Since then, the castle has become a major tourist attraction and the Weimar City Museum is housed in the castle. Today, it is also home to many works of art from the 16th to 20th centuries, as well as significant works of literature and music from the period of the Weimar Republic.
