The construction of Essen Minster began in 1275 and was completed in 1325, making it one of the earliest Gothic churches in Germany. The cathedral was dedicated to St. Ludger, the patron saint of Westphalia. During the 16th century, the cathedral underwent numerous renovations, including a red marble facing. During the Second World War, the cathedral sustained significant damage, which was slowly restored over a number of years. The cathedral was reconsecrated in 1959.
