History:

The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, also known as the Berliner Philharmoniker, was formed in 1882. Though there were many musical groups in Berlin at the time, the orchestra was unique in its ambition to create a high quality orchestra dedicated to performing classical music. The orchestra’s founding was spearheaded by the initiative of pianist and conductor Hans von Bülow, with financial backing from Berlin banker Hermann Wolff. Von Bülow had the pick of Berlin’s best players, many of whom were former members of the court orchestra from Berlin’s royal palace. The orchestra quickly gained recognition, performing at the opening of the city’s new concert hall, the Philharmonie, in 1882. Soon after, the Berlin Philharmonic began touring Europe, making its first appearance in Vienna in 1883. The orchestra earned further acclaim when it was chosen to perform the premier of Johannes Brahms’ First Symphony in 1885. Brandishing the standard of excellence, the orchestra continued on its path to becoming world-renowned. In the first decades of the 20th century, the orchestra was led by celebrated conductors such as Arthur Nikisch, Richard Strauss, and Wilhelm Furtwängler.
