History:

The Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site was established in 1968, as a memorial to the millions of people murdered by the Nazis in the Holocaust. It is located in what was the former concentration camp at Dachau in Germany. The camp was originally established in 1933 by Heinrich Himmler as one of the first concentration camps in Nazi Germany. It was built mainly to house and intern political prisoners of the Nazi regime. At its peak, the camp was holding around 20,000 inmates, mostly Jews, but also Gypsies, homosexuals, and political dissidents. At Dachau, prisoners were subjected to slave labor, medical experiments, and torture. In addition to the horrific conditions, over 41,000 people at the camp died, either from disease, execution or starvation. After World War II, Dachau was converted into a memorial by former concentration camp inmates, and it was opened to the public in 1965.
