History:

isBaptist worship began in the small town of McRae in 1876. On Tuesday, August 23, 1876, a small number of Christians gathered under a tree near the present property of Marvin Housing to hear W.B. Palmer preach the gospel for the first time. After that encouraging service, more and more people came for the next few weeks. Finally, on September 2, 1876, these brave pioneers organized the First Baptist Church of McRae in the Georgia Heights of Telfair County. On September 11, 1876, Brother W.B. Palmer was officially called to serve as the first pastor. Throughout the years, the congregation grew in size and spiri-tual commitment. The pastor and the members labored incessantly to see souls saved and lives transformed. During the tenure of Brother Lewis Whittle as pastor (1929-1948), the church recorded an average membership of 1,104 members. With the new millennium, First Baptist Church McRae, like most churches, has faced new challenges. In spite of those challenges, there has been a great emphasis placed on outreach and evangelism. Parsonage and housing improvements have been made, and the church launched a “Compas-sion Campaign” in 2006 to reach beyond the walls of the church and meet spiritual and physical needs in the community. Today, First Baptist Church McRae strives to follow the Great Commission and continue the work of the pioneers of 1876. Financially and spiritually, this local church has been blessed in countless ways. Regardless of our achievements, God is still not finished writing the prophetic history of First Baptist McRae.
