The church was built on the grounds of Vuokki Castle, which was destroyed in a great fire in 1729. Vuokki Castle had provided a safe haven for the people of Nokia during the years of Swedish reign. After the fire, the people of Nokia, who had been displaced from the area, decided to build a new church to remember those who had perished in the fire and serve as the cultural center for their community.
