Porvoo Orthodox Church History The Porvoo Orthodox Church dates back to the conversion of Finland to Christianity in the 11th century AD. Christianity was introduced to Finland through the influence of King Olav the Holy of Sweden and Norway. The first Greek Orthodox Church in Finland, the Porvoo Cathedral, was founded in 1260 AD by Greek settlers from Novgorod.
