The first record of a church at the site of the present Porvoo Cathedral dates back to 1353. The original building was a Low Gothic structure, likely smaller and with a simpler tower than the one that stands today. It is thought to have been dedicated to St. Olav, although this is not recorded in any documents. In the year 1640, the structure was replaced by a Baroque style building. Following this, additions and modifications were made over the centuries. In 1898, a thorough renovation was undertaken, in which the main features of the present building were created.
