Myyrmäki Church is a Lutheran church located in Vantaa, Finland. It is one of the few modern church buildings designed by the world-renowned architect Alvar Aalto. Built between 1961 and 1969, the church was designed to serve the rapidly growing populous of the settlement of Myyrmäki. History The first religious services were held in Myyrmäki in the 1840s, but the first church, a wooden building that could hold 350 people, was not built until 1928. By the late 1950s, it was obvious that the wooden church was no longer big enough to serve the growing population. The congregation decided to build a new church and chose Alvar Aalto to design it. Construction began in 1961 and the building was inaugurated on 28 October 1969. Facts Myyrmäki Church consists of a main hall, an antechamber, a bell tower, and a parish hall. The main hall is 60m long and has three naves with a capacity of 800 people. The walls are faced with grey brick, except for two white brick segments. The roof is made of steel. The building also features a large window in the apse, designed to provide a view of the city when inside the church. Services offered Myyrmäki Church offers a variety of services, including Sunday Mass, baptisms, weddings, funerals, and special events. Various study groups and activities such as lectures, workshops, youth clubs, and choirs also take place in the church.
