Lemi Church is a Pentecostal church located in eastern Finland, near the Russia-Finland border. The church is believed to have been founded in the 11th or 12th century, making it one of the oldest Christian churches in Finland. The Lemi Church is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Finland and the Lapland Bishopric. History The earliest records of Lemi Church date back to 1129, when it is first mentioned as a place of worship. Over the centuries, the church has seen a number of renovations and additions. The most significant transformation took place in the 12th century, when the building was totally reconstructed and a new tower and nave were added. In 1711, one of the four bells cast in 1705 was replaced by another, since the original bell was believed to be cracked. During the 19th century, the church was restored and renovated several times. In 1874 a new steeple was added, and in 1895 the main construction of the church was completed. Facts The Lemi Church is one of the oldest Christian churches in Finland, and its distinctive bell tower is one of the main landmarks of the region. The church is a wooden, log construction, and its design reflects traditional Finnish church architecture. The church is surrounded by a wooden cemetery, with over two thousand graves. These include three icons, believed to be the oldest in eastern Finland, a few rare china dishes and a wooden Virgin Mary belonging to the sixteenth century. The bell tower houses the fourth bell, which was moved to the top of the tower in 1908. Services The Lemi Church is open to the public year-round, and services and concerts are regularly held.
