Lappeenranta Orthodox Church is one of the oldest and most prominent Orthodox churches in Finland. The church was founded in 1636. It is one of the few churches in Finland that is able to still use the old rite of the Orthodox Church. History The history of the church begins in 1636, when the current buildings of the church were erected. This was the first Orthodox Church in Finland. In the nineteenth century, the church underwent several renovations and additions, and in 1922 the main altar was moved to a more prominent location. In 1943 the church was severely damaged during the Second World War. The roof was damaged and many of the interior furnishings were destroyed. In 1949 the church was restored to its former glory and the interior was made more modern. Facts The interior of the church is traditional and is decorated with icons, which were painted by local artists. The church is also home to a well-known chorus of male voices, which sing ancient hymns. The church is very active in the local community, hosting a range of activities throughout the year, including lectures, concerts, bible study groups and other events. Services The church offers services in both Finnish and Russian languages. It also offers a range of traditional services, including baptisms, weddings, funerals and memorial services. The services are open to all and are very popular with the locals.
