History:

Entoto St. Maryam Church is a 13th-century Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, located on the same hill (literally Entoto mountain) as the country’s royal palace in present-day Addis Ababa. The church was consecrated in 1282 during the reign of King Yekuno Amlak, who had re-established the Solomonic dynasty after a period of Zagwe rule (1137 – 1270). According to tradition, both Yekuno Amlak and his predecessor Lalibela worshipped in the church. The church's library includes rare documents that include royal charters and correspondence of kings of the Solomonic dynasty. It is believed to be the first Ethiopian church built in the circular design and the first Ethiopian church with three aisles.
