St Michael's Church is said to have been founded in 1365 during the reign of Emperor Amda Seyon of Ethiopia. It is believed that the church was founded by Abuna Salama V who was a prominent Ethiopian monk and spiritual leader of the time. Legend has it that during its construction, the local river ran dry after Abuna Salama prayed for it. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Eritrea.
