Sesah Orthodox Church is one of the oldest churches in Eritrea, dating back to at least the 16th century. It is part of the Eritrean Orthodox Church, a member of the Oriental Orthodox tradition. It is one of the oldest African churches outside of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Alexandria, Egypt. The church is located in the northern part of Eritrea, in the area known as Sesah. It is one of the best churches in Eritrea which you must visit.

History:

Hebrew tradition and records indicate that the Sesah church was founded in the first century AD by a group of twelve Christian Ethiopian merchants who had were travelling to India which, at the time, was already a center of Christian faith. The merchants reportedly stopped off in the area and at the time, it was populated with Sabeans, who shared their Christianity and the merchants decided to stay and construct the church. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Eritrea.
