Massawa Orthodox Church in Eritrea (also known as Saint Michael Cathedral) is a landmark church in the port city of Massawa, Eritrea. It was built by a Greek entrepreneur in 1862 and is a historical monument in Eritrea, being one of the first churches to be built in the country. The church has experienced a number of renovations over the years, most notably in 1942-43 when the Italians improved the structure of the building. The church is part of the Eritrean Eastern Orthodox Church and is home to a number of religious services and activities like baptism, the Eucharist, wedding ceremonies, and funerals. Massawa Orthodox Church has been the site of a range of religious ceremonies and events, including the installation of the city’s first bishop in 1993. It welcomes both local and international visitors and offers a range of services to the local community.
