The church was founded by the canons of Osney Abbey, who were granted the charter to construct a church in the area in 1220. The church was originally known as 'Beatrice's Church' after Beatrice de Say, who funded the church's construction. Over the following centuries the church underwent numerous changes and renovations. In 1904, the chancel and transepts were rebuilt, while the nave and aisles were also restored and adorned with beautiful stained glass windows. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in England.
