It was dedicated to the goddess Isis and is considered one of the best-preserved sites from the Egyptian era. The site has a long history, having been built and modified during the reigns of numerous pharaohs from about 500 BCE to 500 CE. As Isis was the main deity worshipped at Philae, the temple was expanded and altered over the centuries to befit her status. In the 19th century, the temple was almost lost under rising water levels caused by the Aswan Dam. Thankfully, a rescue campaign, headed by UNESCO and the Egyptian government, was successful in preserving the Temple of Philae. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Egypt.
