St Mildred’s Church, Canterbury, is a Grade I listed parish church of the Church of England located in the city of Canterbury, Kent in England. It dates back to at least the 12th century, though it may be older. The church is dedicated to Saint Mildred of Thanet (c. 650–710ad), an Anglo-Saxon saint who was a nun and abbess of the monastery at Thanet. It is one of the best churches in England which you must visit.

History:

The earliest known settlement at the site of the present-day church dates back to the Saxon period. The church was first recorded in 1243 and is dedicated to St. Mildred. In the Middle Ages it was served by an abbey whose name was changed to St Mildred’s Auditorium in 1537. This abbey was dissolved in 1539, and the church and its lands eventually passed to the Archbishop of Canterbury. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in England.

During the 13th and 14th centuries the church was enlarged and partly rebuilt. The existing nave, aisles, tower and spire survive from this time. Further alterations were made in the 15th century, with the addition of a south porch, the enlargement of the windows and the construction of an added chapel.

St. Mildred’s has a range of services including regular Sunday services, Wednesday prayer sessions and Sunday Schools. There are occasional concerts and events held in the church, such as the annual Harvest Festival, and Christmas concerts.
