Redeemed Evangelical Mission In Nigeria: History,Facts, & Services

Redeemed Evangelical Mission (REM) is an indigenous mission organization in Nigeria, founded in 1950 by Pastor S.O. Kukoyi. REM has actively worked to witness, educate, and develop people in Nigeria and other African countries for over 50 years. REM emphasizes helping those most in need, advocating for human rights, mobilizing the economically disadvantaged, and engaging in the fight against poverty, ignorance, and disease. REM’s motto is taken from Proverbs 11:30: “He that winneth souls is wise". REM History REM was established from a mission of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG). The RCCG’s missionary arm initially began work in Northern Nigeria. In 1950, Pastor S.O. Kukoyi founded REM to extend their ministry to the Yoruba people in the South of Nigeria, and to other African countries. REM initially focused on evangelism and social transformation, with specific emphasis on education, health, and poverty alleviation. This led to the establishment of schools, hospitals, and churches in rural communities. REM Facts Today, REM is one of the largest missions in sub-Saharan Africa. In the 1950s, the mission had just seven staff members, but today it employs over 600. REM has over 500 churches and its own university, the Redeemed Christian University of Nigeria. REM Services REM provides social services to vulnerable people in Nigeria, including micro-finance, children’s education, medical assistance, empowering women, and development assistance. REM also engages in Christian evangelism, conducting pastoral training and running lay-discipleship courses. In addition, REM runs a number of community development projects in an effort to reduce poverty and promote sustainability.
