History:

The mosque was commissioned by the Abbasid caliph Ahmad ibn Tulun in 876 to serve as an administrative centre and a place of worship. The development of the mosque was based upon the designs of Abbasid-style mosques in Samarra, Iraq and its minaret is similar in design to the Minaret of Samarra. The mosque was completed in 879, along with a waqf associated with it. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Egypt.
