The Landeskirchenamt the Lutheran Church in Brunswick was founded in 1538 by the Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. It is a member of the Protestant Church in Germany and is the oldest Protestant church in the state of Lower Saxony. It is the highest church authority in the Evangelical-Lutheran Church-Region Brunswick. It is self-governing and has a total of 81 congregations and 211,000 members, making it the fifth-largest Lutheran regional church in Germany.
