Hessische Evangelische Kirche In Germany: History,Facts, & Services

Hessische Evangelische Kirche, or HEK, is the largest Protestant church in the state of Hesse in Germany. It was formed in 1971 when seven independent churches in Hesse were united in a voluntary association. The church adheres to the theology and faith teachings of the Protestant Reformation. The official name of the HEK is Evangelische Kirche in Hessen und Nassau, which translates to the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau. HISTORY: The initial churches of the HEK, which belonged to the Lutheran, Reformed, and United traditions, had deep roots in Hesse’s history beginning in the 16th century. Originally, the Lutheran Church was dominant and the churches in the Reformed and United branches had to develop under its influence. After World War 2 in the 1940s, the churches of Hesse were reorganized and eventually they became part of the HEK in 1971. FACTS: The HEK is composed of ten regional churches. The largest is the Rheinland Church which has 4.9 million members, accounting for about two-thirds of all the church’s members. The others are the Mainz Church, Taunus-Wetterau, Westfalen, Hochstift Fulda, Nassau, Schwalm-Eder, Thuringia, Haardt and Pfalz. The highest governing body of the HEK is the Synod which is composed of representatives from each of the ten regional churches. SERVICES: The HEK provides a variety of religious services, devotions and activities for its members. This includes traditional church services, spiritual retreats, and various events throughout the year. The church also provides religious education and pastoral counseling. The HEK operates numerous charitable agencies, hospitals and social service organizations. It also has its own publishing house, the Schlabrendorff Verlag, which produces liturgical and educational materials.
