History:

Eltz Castle is a medieval castle nestled in the hills above the Moselle River valley in Wierschem, Germany. Built in 8th and 12th centuries, the castle has been owned by the Eltz family for 33 generations, and remains one of the few medieval castles that have never been destroyed. The first written mentions of Eltz Castle date back to the year 1157, when the castle was mentioned in a letter from the Archbishop of Trier. According to tradition, Eltz Castle was built around 875 by a local nobleman, Wilhelm der Eltz. The original castle was a motte and bailey structure that housed a keep and several smaller buildings. Over the centuries, Eltz Castle was continually expanded and remodeled. In the 13th century, the castle was expanded to include several new residential buildings. During this period, a large tower was added to the keep, and the interior of the castle was decorated with richly painted murals. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the castle was again altered to meet the changing needs of the Eltz family. Much of the existing structure was modified to include additional living space for various family members, and the exterior was decorated with several defensive towers. Throughout its long history, Eltz Castle has avoided major changes, and many of the original medieval features of the castle have remained intact for over eight centuries. In the 20th century, the castle was further preserved by the Eltz family and, in the 21st century, the castle was allotted protected status by the German government. Today, Eltz Castle remains a major tourist attraction and is open to the public for guided tours. Visit one of the famous monuments of Germany with your friends and family.
