The palazzo was built by Flaminio Colonna in 1521 as a country house, who transferred it to his nephew Marcantonio Colonna in 1539. In 1578 it was acquired by the Sciarra Colonna family (who still owns the palace). The Sciarra family had the building remodeled and increased its size, which included the creation of the courtyard.
