The church was originally built in the 16th century in the courtyard of the neighboring Palazzo dei Tribunali which had been called the Palazzo dei Fiorentini. The church was later remodeled in 1577 and then received its Baroque remodeling in the 18th century. It features three naves with a white and gold neo-Renaissance interior adorned with statues, paintings, and fine decorations. The most striking feature of the church is the huge elliptical dome rising above the main altar.
