History The original cathedral was built in 1782, in the site of an older structure that had been destroyed by an earthquake in 1751. The current building dates from 1871, when it was extensively remodelled and enlarged. The upper part of the facade was added in 1925, as part of the Centennial Independence celebrations. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Mexico.
