History:
Capernaum Baptist Church was founded in 1793 by Baptists who had originally settled in the area in the early 1700s. The church was originally known as the Baptist Church of Madisonville and met at the old Worthington House until they built a log cabin. The church was officially established in 1803 and named Capernaum, a Biblical place mentioned in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, when it was organized and recorded in the Hopkins County Courthouse. Capernaum Baptist Church This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Denmark.

• Capernaum Baptist Church is the oldest church in Madisonville and one of the oldest churches in Kentucky. • The Church’s first pastor was Rev. Humphrey Posey, who served from 1803 to 1825. • In 1823, Capernaum Baptist Church joined the Baptist Union and became affiliated with the Bethel Baptist Association. • The original log cabin was replaced in 1839 by a brick building, which was renovated and expanded in 1982.
