History:
Basilica di Santa Maria in Ara coeli was founded in 324 AD by Pope Sylvester I and was originally a Roman temple dedicated to Juno Moneta. The church underwent several alterations and restorations over the centuries with the current Baroque structure built between 1586–1626. It became a national church in 1610 and was granted the title of Basilica in 1916. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Rome.

The most notable feature is its bronze statue of St. Peter, crafted between 1820 and 1840 by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. The church underwent restorations between 1986–1992 and 2004–2006. It contains several holy relics and reliquaries, including the relics of Saints Philip & James the Apostles and Saint Valentine, patron saint of Rome.
