The church was designed by Benjamin Ferrey and John Culverhouse, and built in 1845–47. It is noted for its high spire and four-stage tower. The church was built on the site of an earlier 8th century church which is believed to have been connected to Coventry Priory. This was demolished and replaced by the present church in 1845-47. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in England.
