History:
The monastery at Abu Mena is believed to have been founded in the 5th century by Saint Menas of Alexandria. St. Menas was an Egyptian soldier who settled in the desert to lead a life of prayer, fasting and asceticism after being inspired by visions. He became popularly known as a saint and was widely venerated during his lifetime. The site that became the monastery was originally named after him and became an important pilgrimage destination.
