St Edmund's Church, Forest Gate In England: History,Facts, & Services

St Edmund's Church, Forest Gate is a Catholic church in the London Borough of Newham, located in the Forest Gate area of the borough. The church was established in 1949 as a church of refuge to serve the large Catholic population of the area as other churches in nearby East Ham, Plaistow, and Stratford were already full. It is named after St Edmund of Abingdon, a medieval statesman and Archbishop of Canterbury. St Edmund's is a popular place of worship for the local people and is renowned for its devotion to the Virgin Mary. The church has a long and varied history. Before 1949, the church served as a convent, an extra-territorial parish of the Archdiocese of Westminster, and then a chapel of ease to St. Mark’s Church in East Ham. The original building and grounds were purchased from the Lepers Company in 1854. The church contains a number of interesting features including a large and impressive sanctuary, which is dominated by a 15-foot high altar designed by renowned Austrian architect and sculptor Ludwig Godtfredsen. The altar is the centre-piece of the church and is decorated with statuettes of celebrated Catholic saints, and the vestments of the clergy. There is also a set of stalls for the laity, and a tower with a weather-vane dating from 1903. Services at St Edmund's Church include Masses, confessions, baptisms, and occasional Benedictions. Sacraments such as Penance and Anointing of the Sick can be requested. The church also runs many activities and groups for children and adults, and is involved in a number of social justice initiatives.
