Brief History:

Little Hagia Sophia, also known as the Little Aya Sofya Mosque, is a former Eastern Orthodox church located in the Sultanahmet district of Istanbul, Turkey. The church dates back to the early 6th century, although its present form was completed in the late 11th century. During the Ottoman period, Little Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque and served as a small prayer hall, while its larger neighbor, Hagia Sophia (known as the Great Mosque of Ayasofya since its conversion in 1453), was used as the primary mosque in Istanbul. The building still retains much of its historic Byzantine interior, including icons of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and various saints. Today, it is a popular tourist destination with great views of both the Sea of Marmara and the Sultanahmet district. It is one of the most famous mosque in Turkey which you must visit.

Architecture:

The architecture of Little Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey, is Romanesque with Byzantine influence. It was built between the 6th and 7th centuries, and is very similar to its larger sister, Hagia Sophia. The structure consists of a huge, central domed hall which is flanked by two smaller side aisles. The exterior is cleft in two by a series of columns, with an exterior entrance highlighted by a horseshoe arch. The interior has a high roof, with an elaborate system of arches for support. Also, unique to this building is the enormous mihrab located on the south wall, which was used to designate the direction of Mecca. Additionally, there are spectacular examples of Islamic art and calligraphy featured throughout the building. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.

Little Hagia Sophia is open daily from 9am to 5pm. Opening hours may change depending on the time of year. It is closed on Sundays. best mosque in the world.
