: Al-Akbar Mosque – also known as Mosque of Gedara, is a place of worship located in the city of Alexandria, Egypt. Built during the Fatimid rule of Egypt, the building is mostly attributed to Ahmed ibn Tulun (r. 868–884). It is one of the oldest mosques in the country and is believed to date back to 13th century. The mosque is an impressive example of Islamic architecture with its towering minarets and intricate carvings along its walls. It features several magnificent wooden archways with geometric patterns and calligraphic inscription of verses from the Quran. The Al-Akbar Mosque in Alexandria, Egypt was built in 1479 and is known for its distinct Moorish-style architecture. The mosque features a large, nearly central domed superstructure with four minarets, four smaller domes, and a large single door to the sanctuary. The walls of the mosque are made of brick and decorated with geometric latticework and arabesque plaster. Inside, the sanctuary is decorated with ornate mural paintings, blue-and-white-tiled details, and carved stone columns, arches, and windows. The mihrab is framed with elaborate marble and mosaic work, and the minbar highlights intricate woodwork. An octagonal fountain is placed in the center of the open courtyard, which has an outer arcade, and a multi-colored marble courtyard floor. The mosque is surrounded by a massive garden, which is filled with plants, tall trees, and fountains. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
