Architecture:

The mosque of Al-Azhar University, located in Cairo, Egypt, dates back to the 10th century, making it one of the oldest universities in the world and one of the most important surviving examples of Islamic architecture. The mosque is considered to be a great example of Islamic architecture and is one of Cairo’s oldest mosques and an integral part of the Al-Azhar University. The mosque is built on an asymmetric plan with a large prayer hall and courtyard. The entrance is located on the southwestern corner of the complex and leads to a large marble-paved courtyard surrounded by three hypostyle porticoes, each with four marble columns. The main prayer hall is a rectangular room, located at the centre of the complex. This hall is flanked by two other smaller prayer halls located on the north and south sides. The interior of the mosque is lavishly decorated with marble and stucco and a number of other ornamental elements. On the east side of the complex is the wall of the old madrasa, the Islamic school where students studied and attended classes prior to the founding of the university. The mosque is now used for prayers and as a venue for religious ceremonies. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
