History:
Playa Boca Chica is a coastal town located in the Dominican Republic, near the capital Santo Domingo. It is a popular tourist destination because of its unique atmosphere and its long stretch of sandy beachfront. The history of Playa Boca Chica dates back to the 17th century, when a Spanish shipwreck stranded the crew on the nearby beach and left them stranded for two weeks. The stranded crew eventually made their way back to Santo Domingo, and the beach became known as “Playa de los Marineros” – or “Beach of the Mariners”. The first documented mentions of Playa Boca Chica date back to the 1750s, when it was visited by British sea captain Christopher Warren and his crew. Warren’s crew documented finding a small fishing village on the beach. The village was called “Cabeza de Herradura”, or “head of the horseshoe”, due to its horseshoe-shaped bay. In 1832, the town was officially incorporated as a city and renamed “Boca Chica”. By the 20th century, the area had become a popular tourist destination, with many visitors from the US, Europe, and the Caribbean coming to enjoy the wide variety of amenities including hotels, restaurants, bars, and of course, the beach.
