: Parque Nacional Sierra de Bahoruco is a national park in the Dominican Republic that was established in 1975 to protect the unique flora, fauna, and ecosystems of the area. The park covers an area of 835 square kilometers, making it one of the largest protected areas in the Caribbean. Featured within the preserve are dry areas of subtropical forests, hidden caves, over 200 species of birds, and an array of reptiles and mammals. History:
The Sierra de Bahoruco National Park, located in Pedernales, Dominican Republic, was officially created on April 18, 1975, through Decree 684-75 and is part of the national system of protected areas. It occupies an area of 175,363 hectares, which represents 10.5% of the total surface of the province of Pedernales and 2.2% of the entire national territory. It was declared a National Reserve in 1977 and constitutes the most extensive of the protected areas in the western region of the Caribbean. In 2003, a program was implemented to restore different areas within the park and carry out activities for conservation, reforestation, afforestation, environmental education, sustainable use and research. Since its establishment, the Park has seen a steady increase in population with visitors and tourists arriving to enjoy the special features of the protected area, including many endemic and unique species. The Park also has several archaeological and geological sites, providing insight into the evolution and history of Hispaniola. The Park is also notable for its important wetlands, providing natural habitats for the Hispaniolan Parrot (Amazona ventralis), one of the critically endangered bird species in the Dominican Republic. In addition, the protected area contains an important network of rivers and water sources, such as the Chámel and La Quinta rivers. The Sierra de Bahoruco National Park also has great scientific value and is home to numerous endemic species of plants, reptiles, amphibians, and birds. In recognition of its importance, it has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO (Man and the Biosphere Program) and a World Heritage Site by the United Nations’ World Heritage Convention.
