History:

The Sierra de Bahoruco National Park, located in Pedernales, Dominican Republic, was officially created on April 18, 1975, through Decree 684-75 and is part of the national system of protected areas. It occupies an area of ​​175,363 hectares, which represents 10.5% of the total surface of the province of Pedernales and 2.2% of the entire national territory. It was declared a National Reserve in 1977 and constitutes the most extensive of the protected areas in the western region of the Caribbean. In 2003, a program was implemented to restore different areas within the park and carry out activities for conservation, reforestation, afforestation, environmental education, sustainable use and research. Since its establishment, the Park has seen a steady increase in population with visitors and tourists arriving to enjoy the special features of the protected area, including many endemic and unique species.
