History:

Founded in 1929, Parque Nacional Armando Bermúdez is the oldest national park in the Dominican Republic. Located in the center of the country, in Santiago Province, it covers an area of 24,600 hectares (approximately 60,754 acres). The park was named in honor of the former dictator General Armando Bermúdez (1897-1995). The park is home to a wide variety of ecosystems, including primary and secondary forests, dry forest scrublands, lakes, rivers, wetlands, and meadows. The park is home to over 1,100 species of plants, including 291 species of trees and shrubs, 44 species of palms, 239 species of ferns and bromeliads, and 645 species of grasses.
