History:

The Hirschsprung Collection has been a Copenhagen institution for almost 130 years. Located in the Østerbro district of Copenhagen, the Hirschsprung Collection is Denmark’s premier collection of Danish and European art from the Golden Age. Founded in 1911 by the tobacco entrepreneur and art collector Heinrich Hirschsprung, the collection today houses over 700 works of art from some of the leading names of the Danish Golden Age like Christen Købke, Constantin Hansen and J.Th. Lundbye. The collection opened to the public in 1911, as a gallery dedicated to 19th century Danish art. Over the years, the collection has grown to encompass a variety of art forms including painting, drawing, sculpture, furniture, porcelain, silver and textiles. The museum now also holds collections of Modernist Art, including pieces from emerging Danish and international artists. The museum has grown to form an important cultural center in Copenhagen, used for educational purposes and exhibitions.
