Stjær Church In Denmark: History,Facts, & Services
Stjær Church is a medieval Lutheran Church located in Stjær, Denmark. It is the oldest existing church building in Northern Zealand and it is also the only church in the municipality of Allerød. The church dates back to the late 1100s and is built in the traditional Nordic Romanesque style. It features a long, gabled nave and a small, cross-shaped choir located in the same roof plane as the nave, with a flat-ceiling, round-arched choir room. The church measures 34 m long and 14 m wide, making it one of the largest churches in Denmark from its era.
Stjær Church History
The church was originally built during the 1180s, making it one of the oldest churches in Denmark. The oldest parts of the church include the nave and choir, as well as certain portions of the galleries, vaults and gravesites. In 1220, the church was expanded to include a 20m long aisle built alongside the nave and an intricately decorated cross-shaped choir room dating back to the 14th century.
Through the years, the church underwent several renovations, beginning in the 1730s and continuing until 2015. During the most recent renovation, a pre-recorded pipe organ was installed to replace the outdated one originally installed in 1688 and further additions included improved soundproofing and heating, as well as updated sanitation.
