History:

The history of St. Thomas Church dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was founded by monks of the Augustinian Order in 1186. The original church building was in existence until 1539, when it was destroyed by Lutheran reformers. The current church building was constructed between 1212 and 1275. Throughout the centuries, the church has been remodeled numerous times and has been the home to many preachers, musicians, and writers. The church has also served as the main venue for Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantatas, as well as the home to great music master such as Johann Adam Reinken and Arnold Schönberg. During the bombing of Leipzig in 1943, St. Thomas Church was severely damaged. However, the main structure survived and was eventually restored to its original glory in the 1950s.
